Disclaimer
I have a whole host of limitations as a writer – in part because I’m just sloppy and disorganized much of the time, but more importantly, due to my social location. As a white, middle-class, college-educated, and able-bodied man, I possess privileges that put me at an unfair advantage over others. As a result, no matter how idealistic my rhetoric is, I have a greater stake in preserving the status quo than most people in the world. Also, having grown up in a society in which people like me have exerted a long-standing monopoly over political, economic, social, and virtually every other area of life as we know it, I’m in an excellent position to believe that my ideas are pure gold and that everyone else’s are more akin to excrement. You and I both know that’s far from the truth, and assuming I post with any regularity, we will have plenty of examples at our disposal to help refute such a myth.
Recognizing my limitations, of which the above paragraph is a brief and partial summary, I take seriously the need for me to think critically, engage in self-scrutiny, and to listen more than I talk. And I hope you will help me along the way by sharing your ideas and questions and engaging me in dialogue. I think there’s a lot we can learn from each other.
